In Summertime on Bredon - A.E. Housman

music by Graham Peel

Sung by Harvey with the beautiful accompaniment from Mike Dixon

This for Jane

We will try to end with an old ‘front parlour’ favourite from the Victorian era which is also an abiding memory from the ‘old kitchen sing-a-longs’ so fondly remembered by Jane who has suffered my renditions when we were young and now has had to suffer them all over again 45 years later to try to get this project into some sort of shape. This last song is ‘In Summertime on Bredon’ by Graham Peel, seldom sung today. According to Geoffrey Parsons who introduced me to this song this song, it is the quintessential English song. Some thought from an Australian who met the song for the first time when accompanying the great Australian baritone Peter Dawson. It is entirely possible that this song will not appear on the CD as the memories are so strong and my emotional control now so weak that I can now never get to the end without breaking down!! However we will try – with Andrew Lynwoods’s help! I hope you will accept this CD in the spirit in which it is offered. If you are so fortunate as to receive one it will have the benefit of being a free one!
