The 'Why' In the beginning Going to RAM The career begins The swan song The career ends For Jane At the end
My foray into the professional singing world began when Bruce Boyce announced that I would be singing at the Connaught Rooms in London in a recital instead of him. “I have told them I am not well”, he announced one day at the beginning of a lesson – “but what they want is for me to sing two Roger Quilter songs and I don’t do cissy songs! I am going to teach them to you and YOU are going to sing them for me!” (My first London professional gig) – so here they are – I think they are fine examples of classic English song. When I went to my next lesson after this recital Bruce Boyce held out his hand – not to shake mine in any congratulatory mode but for the fee that I had earned. “That’s your lesson for today boy – that was MY booking” He took the 15 guineas and gave me a handful of shillings! This was my welcome to the profession.

My career begins ….
